Joshua R. Stover

Major Joshua R. Stover, 10th Virginia Infantry. Stover began his service as Captain of Company A, Strasburg Guards and promoted to Major after the Battle of McDowell.

Description:

Major Joshua Stover was a native of Strasburg, Virginia. Stover served as captain of Company A of the Strasburg Guards. He then became Major of the 10th Virginia Infantry. This unit campaigned with Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson during his 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign.


Joshua was with Jackson the following spring during his flank attack at Chancellorsville. Unfortunately, Major Stover died during this battle. After the battle he was buried next the shattered limb of Jackson in Elwood Cemetery in Fredericksburg, until his remains were moved to the Fredericksburg Confederate Cemetery following the war.
